Inmate Makes BSU Quilt for Charity

Here’s a story about an inmate that makes quilts for charity out of old prison blue jeans and worn out orange offender transport jumpsuits.   http://www.swxrightnow.com/Global/story.asp?S=12158570

I’m not sure how I feel about that.  It’s nice that he is doing something good for others, but I am not sure I would like getting a quilt made from old prison clothing.  What do YOU think?

Here is the press release:

BOISE, Idaho. – A South Idaho Correctional Institution inmate is helping raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. Inmate John Gout has made a blue and orange Boise State University (BSU) quilt out of old prison blue jeans and worn out orange offender transport jumpsuits; and members of the BSU football team have autographed it.

The quilt will be given to the Ronald McDonald House on Thursday and Gout will be on present for the presentation.

Under the supervision of prison laundry officers, Gout started making quilts out of scraps two years ago while working in SICI’s laundry room. Since then, Gout has donated more than 25 quilts to variety of organizations. In addition to the Bronco quilt, Gout will present the Ronald McDonald House with seven other quilts.

“We are able to fulfill our mission through the generosity and goodwill of the community,” says Mindy Plumlee, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Idaho. “We appreciate the donation of quilts. They will bring comfort to families of sick children during a very difficult time.”

  1. I think he did a great job. I wouldn’t have a problem with having a quilt made from prison clothing. They are washed. I am glad to see that he was allowed to be a productive member of society even though he is behind bars. Thanks for sharing the article.

  2. Fabric is fabric! We make quilts out of a loved ones clothes, why not jeans! And if they got for a good cause even better. If it keeps someone warm then it’s all worth it!

  3. I think it is great. He is able to keep fabric out of the landfills. Each quilt is unique in that not everyone can say they made a quilt from prison clothes and he is doing it for a good cause. This is the kind of rehabilitation we need in prisons.

  4. What a great idea. Unless told, who’s to know where the fabric came from. Good for Mr. Gout.

  5. I think the quilt is rather awesome. Imagine what he could do with other fabric.

  6. He is truly paying his ‘debt to society’ in more ways than one and giving to others. What a wonderful thing!

  7. I think it’s great. I would not have a problem with it . This sort of productivity should be encouraged. That man is setting a good example for the other men there .

  8. I like this. He’s being creative and contributing to a cause universally admired. It appears his work is more than adequate and his contributions are welcome and appreciated. What’s not to like?
