Farmers Daughter Quilt Block – Block of the Month

This Farmers Daughter is celebrating the harvest On the Farm. To make this block, you will need:

  • (5) red 3″ squares
  • (8) background 3″ squares
  • (8) harvest 3″ squares
  • (4) background 3″ x 8″ rectangles.

Before starting this project, I recommend that you press your fabric with spray sizing. It will make it easier to cut small pieces. Take the time to clean your machine, put in a new needle, and fill a few bobbins. When pressing, just hold the iron over a spot for a moment or two. This pattern assumes a perfect 1/4” seam.

Here are the Fabrics I am using

PLEASE NOTE: This block finishes to 12-1/2″.

Make the center nine-patch by sewing the 3″ red and 3″ background squares in (3) rows of three each. Press to the dark. Sew the rows together and press toward the center. Square this up to 8″.

Nine-Patch Quilt Block

Draw a diagonal line on the back of all the harvest squares. This will be your sewing line. Place them on the background rectangle as shown.

Sew on the line and fold the square over. If the edges match, you can trim the underside. Make (4) units like the one below. Sew one to both sides of the nine-patch and press to the nine-patch.

Sew a 3″ background square to both sides of the remaining two units. Press to the square.

Sew these to the top and bottom of the nine patch, taking care to press the block seams in opposite directions so the block lies flat.

Give your block one final pressing and square it up to 13″.

You are done!
