# Love Letters Quilt Block for #QuiltBlockMania

Here’s the Love Letters Quilt Block for the #QuiltBlockMania Blog Hop. Be sure to check out the full list of designers at the bottom of the page. There is also a list of other free Valentines Day projects, too.

To print this page, click the green *Print* button under the designer list. If that doesn’t work, try Ctrl + P (or Flower + P) to bring up the printer dialog box.

Kris’s note: I am assuming everyone is comfortable making HSTs (Half Square Triangles), QSTs (Quarter Square Triangles), and the traditional method of making Flying Geese. But if you need a refresher, check out last years [Ten Speed Mystery](https://scrapdash.com/ten-speed-mystery-quilt-clue-two/) for the HSTs and [Three-Part QSTs. ](https://scrapdash.com/ten-speed-mystery-quilt-clue-six/) Here is a tutorial for the [Flip-N-Sew method of making Flying Geese](https://scrapdash.com/how-to-make-a-traditional-flying-goose-quilt-block/).

## How to Make a Love Letters Quilt Block

![Love-Letters-by-Scrapdash A quilt block design features a pink and red ribbon bow above a purple heart, with two pink envelopes at the bottom corners on a white textured background.](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Love-Letters-by-Scrapdash-400x401.jpg)

### This is a three-part quilt block. You will need to make:

- The Center Bow
- The Heart Applique
- The Love Letters Border

**Assemble**: (all sizes are unfinished)

- (12) 1-1/2″ red and white HSTs (For Step One)
- (6) 1-1/2″ pink and white HSTs (For Step One)
- (7) 1-1/2″ red squares (For Step One)
- (1) 4″ red square (For Step Three)
- (1) 3-1/2″ red square (For Step Three)
- (1) 5″ red square (for Step Two)
- (1) 1-1/2″ x 3″ red rectangle (For Step Three)
- (4) 1-1/2″ pink squares (For Step One)
- (1) 1-1/2″ x 3″ pink rectangle (For Step Three)
- (1) 4″ pink square (For Step Three)
- (1) 3-1/2″ pink square (For Step Three)
- (6) 1-1/2″ white squares (For Step One and Three)
- (2) 4″ white squares (For Step Three)
- (4) 1-1/2″ × 2-1/2″ white rectangles (For Step One)
- (2) 3″ × 7-1/2″ white rectangles (For Step One)
- (1) 2-1/5″ × 5-1/2″ white rectangle (For Step One)
- (2) 3″ × 7-1/2″ white rectangles (For Step One)

### Step One: The 7-1/2″ Center Bow

Using the (8) 1-1/2″ red and white HSTs, (2) 1-1/2″ pink and white HSTs, (2) 1-1/2″ pink squares, (2) 1-1/2″ white squares, (5) 1-1/2″ red squares, and (1) 1-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ white rectangle, make the top of the bow as shown below.

![love-letters-top A quilt block pattern featuring white, pink, and burgundy geometric shapes arranged to form two interlocking rings on a rectangular grid.](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/love-letters-top.jpg)

Using (2) 1-1/2″ pink and white HSTs, (2) 1-1/2″ red and white HSTs, (2) 1-1/2″ red squares, and (3) 1-1/2″ x 2-1/2″ white rectangles, make the center unit shown below.

![love-letters-middle A quilt block pattern with two stylized high-heeled shoes, made from red and pink fabric pieces on a white background, arranged symmetrically facing each other.](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/love-letters-middle.jpg)

Using (2) 1-1/2″ pink and white HSTs, (2) 1-1/2″ pink squares, and (1) 2-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ white rectangle unit, make the bottom unit shown below.

![love-letters-bottom Rectangular white banner with a subtle textured pattern, bordered by two pink triangular corners, each decorated with small plus signs.](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/love-letters-bottom.jpg)

Sew the three sections together and press. This part of the block should measure 7-1/2″. Sew a 3″ x 7-1/2″ white rectangle to both top and bottom of this section. It should now measure 7-1/2″ x 12-1/2″.

### Step Two: The 3″ Heart Applique

**Assemble**: (all sizes are unfinished)

- a 5″ square of red
- applique thread and needle, or fusible web (see [How to Applique using Fusible Web](https://phoebemoon.com/fusible-quilt-applique-technique/))

For this pattern, I used the [Heart Die by Accuquilt](https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=88677&awinaffid=2008229&platform=dl&ued=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.accuquilt.com%2Fgo-heart-2-3-4-die.html). You may have seen the [Lucky in Love](https://scrapdash.com/lucky-love-free-pattern-st-patricks-day/) table runner or the [Heart of My Heart](https://scrapdash.com/endless-love/) wall hanging that I made with that die. But, you don’t NEED the die. You can get a heart shaped motif from any word processing program, [coloring book](https://www.easypeasyandfun.com/printable-heart-templates/), or [Electric Quilt](https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=95417&awinaffid=2008229&platform=dl&ued=https%3A%2F%2Felectricquilt.com%2F). You can certainly draw it freehand if you like. It should end up about 3″ finished but don’t stress that part!

Place the heart in the middle of the bottom part of the block as shown below. Applique in place.

### Step Three: The Love Letters Border

Assemble:

- (2) 3″ (unfinished) QSTs ([Tutorial here)](https://scrapdash.com/ten-speed-mystery-quilt-clue-six/)
    - These are made from a 3-1/2″ pink and white HST matched with a 3-1/2″ pink square and a 3-1/2″ red and white HST matched with a 3-1/2″ red square. You will end up with leftovers if you are only making the one block.
- (2) 1-3/4″ × 3″ Flying Geese blocks [(tutorial here)](https://scrapdash.com/how-to-make-a-traditional-flying-goose-quilt-block/)
- (2) 3″ × 8-3/4″ White rectangles

Using the QSTs and the Flying Geese blocks, make the (2) Love Letters corner blocks. These blocks should measure 3″ x 4-1/4″.

Sew a 3″ × 8-3/4″ White rectangle to the top of each corner block to make the border.

![love-letter-red-corner A Love Letters Quilt Block featuring a red triangle on top, a beige triangle below it forming an arrow shape, and a red background with white at the top, divided into geometric sections.](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/love-letter-red-corner.jpg)

![love-letters-block A Love Letters Quilt Block design featuring a large pink and red bow with geometric shapes on a light gray background, accented by pink and yellow shapes in the bottom corners.](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/love-letters-block-800x800.jpg)

Whew! That was one involved block! Now, let’s do something with it.

## Idea: Make a Love Letters Table Runner

This table runner has a 1-1/2″ (unfinished) white inner border and a 2-1/2″ (unfinished) outer border, so it finishes at 18-1/2″ × 54-1/2″. Wouldn’t this look nice if you quilted it in a heart motif?

## Idea: Make a Love Letters Quilt

This quilt has a 1-1/2″ (unfinished) white inner border and a 3″ (unfinished) outer border, so it finishes 43″ square. Perfect for a new baby quilt!
