# Rockets Red Glare

![The Great American Quilt Hop Horizontal Banner reading The Great American Quilt Hop and Celebrating 250 years of Independence through the timeless tradition of quilting, featuring red, white, and blue patriotic designs, stars, and the Rockets Red Glare Quilt Pattern.](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/The-Great-American-Quilt-Hop-Horizontal.jpg)

Welcome to The Great American Quilt Hop! This is a one-day blog hop showcasing quilts and quilt projects inspired by our nation’s 250 years of history, heritage, and freedom. Each participant has written a blog post that introduces the hop, shares their own quilt and pattern, and then showcases the work of a dozen or so quilters.

I can’t honestly say that the [Rockets’ Red Glare](https://phoebemoon.com/quilt-patterns/rockets-red-glare-throw-quilt-pattern/) Pattern was inspired by any one person or event. The design itself was based on an antique quilt that caught my eye, and I adapted it into a modern pattern sized appropriately for a Quilt of Valor. But if I’m being asked why I continue to design patriotic quilts year after year, the answer is much more personal.

I am proud to be an American, and I am especially proud of my daughter and son-in-law. My daughter served in the Army, and although she retired after 22 years, she continues to serve her community every day as a nurse. My son-in-law served in the Marine Corps and now works in law enforcement. Watching them dedicate their lives to helping and protecting others changed my perspective on what it means to be a hero.

Before they served, my idea of heroism was probably shaped by history books and movies. Today, my definition is much simpler. Heroes are the people who quietly show up every day, do difficult jobs, and put the needs of others before their own.

Perhaps that’s why patriotic quilts continue to find their way onto my drawing board. Over the years I’ve designed many red, white, and blue quilts, including several [free patriotic patterns](https://phoebemoon.com/block-craft-patterns/free-quilt-patterns/). They are my small way of honoring the men and women who serve our country and our communities. Every stitch is a reminder that freedom is never free, and that ordinary people perform extraordinary acts of service every day.

Hometown Hearts is a quilt designed with small town celebrations in mind. Think 4th of July parades and fireworks. Dad loved a good fireworks display. The fabric collection used in this quilt is called Missing You from Island Batik. I was inspired to design this collection from the devotion Mom and Dad had to each other along with the strong pride Dad had for serving his country.
