# Sunny Days Quilt Block for #QuiltBlockMania

When the theme for this months #QuiltBlockMania was announced as “weather”, I looked through my existing 12″ blocks to make sure I didn’t duplicate anything. I really wanted to use (or reuse) [the Kite Block](https://scrapdash.com/kite-with-tail-quilt-block/), but then I remembered the [Butterflies are Free](https://scrapdash.com/butterflies-are-free-quilt-block/) block. I created a new block using that technique. Be sure to check out the full list of designers at the bottom of the page to see what they created.

The Butterfly’s are Free pattern is available for free to subscribers at the bottom of the page. If you’d rather just print, click the green *Print* button under the designer list. If that doesn’t work, try Ctrl + P (or Flower + P) to bring up the printer dialog box.

## Sunny Days Quilt Block

This is my version of the Butterflies are Free block. It’s made from the same components, but it is colored differently. Instead of using scraps, I used blue blocks for the sky, white blocks for the clouds, and yellow corners for the sun rays.

### Making the Blocks

Assemble:

- (12) 3-1/2″ Blue Squares
- (4) 3-1/2″ White Squares
- (12) 2-1/2″ Yellow squares
- Use your scraps if you like!

Draw a diagonal line in pencil on the back of the 2-1/2″ colored squares. Place the colored square right sides together in one corner of a White square so that the pencil line connects the two sides as shown. Stitch on the line.

Make (4) blocks like the one above from the 3-1/2″ white squares and 2-1/2″ yellow squares. Flip the small square over the seam and press to the corner. The edges should match. Trim the excess on the underside.

Make (12) blocks like the one above from the 3-1/2″ blue squares and 2-1/2″ yellow squares. Flip the small square over the seam and press to the corner. The edges should match. Trim the excess on the underside.

Using those (16) blocks , create the design shown at the top of the page. Remember to press the seams of the odd rows to the right and the seams of the even rows to the left. This will help you keep your seams facing opposite directions when you sew the rows together.

You are done! That was an easy block, wasn’t it? If it is bright and sunny outside, you might want to make three for a table runner. I colored my graphic below to honor the [Blood Moon Selenelion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_eclipse).
