[![cauldron quilt Block](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/cauldron.jpg)](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/cauldron.jpg)***Double double toil and trouble Fire burn and cauldron bubble* from Macbeth** ## How to make a cauldron quilt block for Halloween This 12″ block will fit wonderfully into a spooky Halloween quilt. ### Assemble: - (4) 3″ Smoky Gray squares - (1) 2-1/2″ Smoky Gray square - (4) 3″ Flame Orange squares - (1) 2-1/2″ Flame Orange square - (2) 3″ Fire Red squares - (3) 3″ Cauldron Black squares - (1) 2-1/2″ × 4-1/2″ Smoky Gray rectangle - (1) 2-1/2″ × 8-1/2″ Smoky Gray rectangle - (2) 2-1/2″ × 10-1/2″ Smoky Gray rectangles - (1) 2-1/2″ × 8-1/2″ Cauldron Black rectangle - (1) 2-1/2″ × 4-1/2″ Cauldron Black rectangle [![Several rectangular and square fabric pieces in black, gray, yellow, and orange patterns are arranged on a green cutting mat with a grid pattern.](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cauldron-Fabrics.jpg)](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cauldron-Fabrics.jpg) ### Making Half Square Triangle (HST) Blocks ![How to Create and Square Up an HST Quilt Block](https://scrapdash.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Picture1.png) The Traditional Method of making Half Square Triangle Blocks (HSTs) is to place a 2-7/8″ dark square right sides together with a 2-7/8″ light square. Draw a diagonal line on the back of one square. Sew 1/4″ on both sides of the line. Cut on the line and press to the dark. You will have made two blocks which measure exactly 2-1/2″ square. My personal preference is to cut the original squares slightly too large (3″) and square up the HST to 2-1/2″ later on. Using the 3″ squares, make the HSTs as shown. Square up to 2-1/2″ and press to the dark. The center of this block is put together in rows. Using the HSTs you just made and the pieces in the Assemble list, create these rows. Sew them as shown, pressing the block seams in the row in opposite directions. Press the row seams down. This helps the row seams nest and lay flat when sewn together. The center should measure 8-1/2″ × 12-1/2″. Sew the borders on the block, press to the border, and you are done! Notice how the diagonal line on the ruler matches up with the diagonal seams in the quilt.
