Oh, no! Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow! That means 6 more weeks of winter. Can it be true?
The tradition is that if a groundhog sees his shadow while looking around in February, he will get scared and go back into his burrow, not to come out until March.
Thus, the idea of six more weeks of winter was born.
A groundhog, or whistle pig, goes into hibernation in the late fall. Male groundhogs emerge from their burrows to look for a mate in February then go underground again. Both genders come out of hibernation for good in March. They are the ideal animal for this tradition.
In 1887, the Punxsutawney newspaper declared that Phil, the Punxsutawney groundhog, was America’s only true weather-forecasting groundhog. Today, thousands of people converge on Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney each February 2 to witness Phil’s prediction. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club hosts a three-day festival celebrating the event.
By the way, a groundhog is famous for one other thing. It’s also known as a woodchuck, as in “how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?”

Wait!! Hahaha. I just saw on the news that “Phil” did NOT see his shadow so we have an early Spring coming. 😳
Well, up here in the middle of Canada (Yorkon, Saskatchewan) it is -20C with a windchill of -35C. We’ve had snow overnight, so I will be shovelling for about 45 minutes to get the sidewalk and driveway cleared. Spring for us is April. We never plant the garden until after the third week in May! The great thing is we do have four seasons, but Winter is the longest!
After a few chilly days in the 40’s it’s supposed to be 58C today and almost 70C tomorrow. With mid 60’s the rest of the week and back down to 50’s next week. I can’t wait for permanent 70C or above, Bring on spring and summer!
Since we have moved south. It was very sunny today and humid!! No problem with 6 more weeks (or months) of this kind of weather!!
It is 23 degrees with 4 new inches of snow to pile on the 12 inches we already have, but three days ago it was sunny and cold and the moose seen his shadow so we have 6 more months of Winter in Alaska! Ha ha ha
