Making the Square Dance Quilt Block using the Square Squared Ruler

Here is the square dance block

Square Dance Quilt Block

Make a sample first. I prefer to use the Square-Squared DT09 ruler because it makes square-in-a-square units that are too large, which you square up later using that ruler. This square will finish at 5″ (unfinished is 5-1/2″), so you will use the 5″ markings on the ruler.

Start by placing the Tossed Floral square under the part of the ruler that is labeled “Center square for 5″ blocks”. Cut according to the ruler. It should be about 4-1/8″ square.

Square-Dance- Step 1

You will be sewing triangles to opposite sides of this square. To get the size of this triangle, use the chart on the side of the ruler. This chart indicates that you will cut a 3-3/4″ square on the diagonal to make (2) triangles. Cut both a Watercolor on Sangria square and a Crescent Moons on Midnight square to make (4) triangles, (2) of each color. That’s a First Choice DT27 Ruler in the picture, which I like because it has 1/8″ markings.

Centering the triangle on the square and using a 1/4″ seam, sew a Watercolor on Sangria triangle to one side of the Tossed Floral square. Sew a Crescent Moons on Midnight on the opposite side, again centering the triangle on the square. Press toward the triangle.

Repeat this process with the other two triangles. Note that the square it makes is very sloppy.  That’s okay!  You are going to use the 5-1/2″ markings on the end of the ruler to square it up by placing the Tossed Floral center square in the 5″ square lines on the ruler.  When you are done, it should look like the one at the top of this page. If your center square ends up a little large or a little small, adjust your sea allowance and make another test square.

This is the Square Squared ruler.
