The Bipartisan Committee Table Runner

This is a faux braid that makes a great border – and an even better tablerunner!  I call mine Bipartisan Committee for reasons you will see in a moment.

To make it, I started with four strips 2-1/2″ wide by the Width of Fabric (WOF.)  I sewed them together pressed them all in one direction and measured them.  As expected, they measured 8-1/2″ wide.  I cut the strip into four squares 8-1/2″ x 8-1/2″.

Then I cut them in two different directions. I called one group of squares “the Republicans” and the other group “the Democrats”.

I made a row of Democrats….

Then I filled in the blanks with Republicans.

I centered a Republican on top of a Democrat (Oh!  the horror!) and sewed. There were huge dog ears, but I didn’t cut them off.

Because I knew they would disappear when I added the next triangle.

I kept adding triangles until I ran out of triangles.

So I made another row, then sewed the two rows together…
