A square block sent on point can be colored in a lot of different ways to add visual interest to a quilt. In the case of the Midnight Star Table Topper pattern, it is used in the center of the quilt, with the star points reaching out from there.

There are many different methods of making a Square in a Square block. Here is the one I show in the pattern.
Start with:
- (1) 3-1/4″ Background squares
- (2) 3″ Dark Blue squares
Cut the (2) 3″ Dark Blue squares on the diagonal to make (4) triangles.
Sew a triangle to opposite sides of a 3-1/4″ Background square. Match the center of the square with the center of the triangle. Press to the triangle.
Sew a triangle to the remaining two sides of the Background square, again matching the center of the square with the center of the triangle. Press to the triangle.
Square up the block to 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″, taking care not to cut off the points. The ruler in the picture is a June Tailor ruler, which I like because it not only has the horizontal and vertical lines but also diagonal line and the 1/4″ seam allowance marked. Riley Blake makes a similar ruler available in a set of 5 called Cute Cuts.
Your block is square! Would you like to make them a different size? Here is a chart for you to download and print.
