Ten-Speed Mystery Quilt Clue Six

No More HSTs! Now they are QSTs! 3 Part QSTs, that is.

Assemble:

  • (80) 4-1/2″ × 4-1/2″ Background Squares
  • (80) 4-1/2″ × 4-1/2″ HSTs that you just made

Draw a diagonal line on the back of the (80) 4-1/2″ Background squares. Match your HST with this square, right sides together, so the diagonal line goes through the seam of the HST. Sew 1/4″ on either side of the line. Cut on the line.

You should now have (160) 3-Part QSTS, one with a diagonal that goes to the right and one with a diagonal that goes to the left. Press to the large triangle and square up to
3-1/2″ × 3-1/2″.

PJ sent a picture of her using the the Perfect Half Square Ruler to square up her HSTs. I really like this ruler myself, especially for QSTs, but I don’t think it’s sold any more. If you find one in a guild sale, grab it. It’s really quite useful. Otherwise, I suggest investing in Fussy Cut rulers. That center X lets me center the ruler on the block. The marked seam allowances help me make sure that the points won’t be cut off.

Mix them up! Put them in a bag and shake them!

Take them out of the bag and sort them into two piles of (80) each. One pile will have diagonals that go to the left and the other pile will have diagonals that go to the right. You are only using one pile in this clue.

Take all the blocks with matching diagonals and sew them into a pinwheel as shown. Don’t mix up the blocks with different diagonals or you might not get the pinwheel-in-a-square effect. Press and square up to 6-1/2″ × 6-1/2″.

Assemble:

  • (40) 3-1/2″ × 6-1/2″ Background Rectangles
  • (20) 6-1/2″ × 6-1/2″ Pinwheels that you just made

Sew a 3-1/2″ × 6-1/2″ Background Rectangle to both sides of the Pinwheel. Make (20) and press to the Pinwheel. This unit should measure 6-1/2″ × 12-1/2″.
