Here’s a mystery that’s a fast as a 10 Speed Bike! It uses 10″ squares (layer cakes.)
Would you like a chart of HST and QST sizes? It’s available free to subscribers at the bottom of the page. If you’d rather just print, click the green Print button at the bottom of the tutorial. If that doesn’t work, try Ctrl + P (or Flower + P) to bring up the printer dialog box.
Making More Blocks
Assemble:
- (80) The remaining 3-Part QSTs with matching diagonals
- (20) 6-1/2″ × 12-1/2″ Pinwheel Units that you just made
- (40) 3-1/2″ × 6-1/2″ Background Rectangles
Sew a 3-part QST to both ends of the (40) 3-1/2″ × 6-1/2″ Background Rectangles as shown. Press to the QST.

Rotating half of these units upside down, sew them to the top and bottom of the pinwheel units you made on the previous page. Take a minute to look at them. Are all the Background triangles facing the center? If you are sure it is right, sew the block together. Make (20) blocks and press as shown. Square up to 12-1/2″ if necessary.
