This is a Mystery quilt. Clues will be given every hour, starting at 10:00 AM Eastern on January 1, 2026. Clue # 3. This quilt finishes at 71″ x 92″ and is suitable for beginners. Look for a list of clue times at the bottom of this page.
To print this clue, use the green Print Friendly button below those clues. If that doesn’t work, try pressing down the CNTRL button and the P button at the same time. Or the COMMAND button and the P button if you are on a Mac.
Some countries greet the New Year with fireworks that light up the sky. Others prefer music, lanterns, or a crowd countdown where everyone promises loudly to eat better and then immediately raids the snack table.
In Scotland, Hogmanay brings torchlight parades and the custom of first footing. The first visitor after midnight should bring symbolic gifts for good fortune in the coming year. A dark haired man is considered best luck, which may require some careful neighborhood coordination.
In Brazil and Argentina, many celebrate on the beach where jumping ocean waves brings luck. If you tried that on Lake Erie in January, the luck might be that you make it back indoors in one piece.
Of course, quilters celebrate by setting aside the first project of the year. Nothing says Happy New Year like crisp fabric, sharp scissors, and the promise that this time you really will finish the mystery quilt.
Making 6 Big “H” Blocks
Assemble:
- (36) 6-1/2″ Small “H” blocks that you made in Clue Two
- (36) 2-1/2″ × 6-1/2″ Background rectangles
This block is actually sewn sideways, then turned 90 degrees to be used in the quilt. Since a sideways “H” looks like an “I”, that’s what I am going to call them.
Sew (2) “I” blocks between (3) 2-1/2″ × 6-1/2″ Background rectangles. Make (12) rows like this, pressing to the Background rectangle. Your row should measure 6-1/2″ × 18-1/2″. These will be the top and bottom of the sideways Big “H” block.

Sew a 6-1/2″ Background square between (2) “I” blocks. Make (6) rows like this, pressing to the Background square. Your row should measure 6-1/2″ × 18-1/2″. This row is the center of the sideways Big “H” block.

Sew this unit between (2) 3-part top and bottom units as shown below. The direction of your row seams doesn’t matter as this block will be put in a sashing.
Press from the back and square up to 18-1/2″ if necessary. Make 6.
