This is a Mystery quilt. Clues will be given every hour, starting at 10:00 AM Eastern on January 1, 2026. This is the final clue. This quilt finishes at 71″ x 92″ and is suitable for beginners. Look for a list of clue times at the bottom of this page.

Many cultures believe the New Year arrives carrying a little mystery of its own. In Scotland, people wait to see who will be the first footer, the first person to cross the threshold after midnight. Tradition says this visitor sets the tone for the whole year. A tall, dark haired guest is considered the best luck of all, though most households will settle for anyone who shows up with snacks.
In some villages, folks even hide around corners to see who appears first, treating the moment like the grand reveal in a detective story. If quilters followed this custom, we would probably peek around the sewing room door to see which fabric shows up first. With any luck, it would be the one we actually meant to use.
Making The Top
Assemble:
- (2) Odd Rows
- (2) Even Rows
- (5) Sashings
Sew a sashing to the bottom of each row. Use pins to help keep the seams facing in opposite directions. Sew these rows-with-sashing in numerical order, (odd/even/odd/even) then sew the leftover sashing to the top row. Press the entire top from the back so you can fix any accidentally twisted seams. The direction of your row seams doesn’t matter. Your quilt top should now measure 62-1/2″ × 82-1/2″.

Adding the Borders
Assemble:
- The Top you just made
- The long 5″ Outer Border strip you made in Clue Four, cut into (2) 5″ × 82-1/2″ rectangles and (2) 5″ × 71-1/2″ rectangles.
It’s always best to use a walking foot when sewing long strips on a quilt. Forcing the quilt top to match two identically cut border strips will help ensure that the quilt is square. If one side of the quilt is just the tiniest bit longer than the border, place the quilt top down on the bed of your sewing machine when sewing the border on. The feed dogs will help take up the slack. Reverse the process if it is your border that is longer.
Using a walking foot, sew the (2) 82-1/2″ Outer Border rectangles to each side of the quilt top, taking care to match the center of the strip with the center of the quilt top. Ease to fit if necessary. Press to the border. Again using a walking foot and matching centers, sew the (2) 71-1/2″ Outer Border rectangles to the top and bottom of the quilt top. Ease to fit if necessary. Press to the border.
You are done! Press your completed top from the wrong side again, making one last check to make sure there are no twisted seams.

Pin your top to the wall for a couple of days in an obvious place so you can enjoy it and your family can praise you. Use that time to decide how to finish the quilt. Don’t forget to add a label. Preserve your place in history—sign and date your quilts!
