Corn off the Cob Quilt Block – November Block of the Month

Corn off the Cob Quilt

This Corn off the Cob quilt block is part of a challenge to make a 12″ block using the colors in a color card with the theme of Food. I decided to show a block named after a traditional Thanksgiving food.

Corn off the Cob Quilt

This was the Super Sunday mystery quilt of 2013. It’s a very easy block, with a lot of great variations! It makes a fast and easy baby quilt or a quick charity quilt. Use up your scraps!

Here is the basic Corn off the Cob Quilt Block

Quilt Tutorial: the basic block of a Corn off the Cob Quilt
The numbers shown are unfinished sizes – what you will need to cut.

You can see that this would make a great stash buster or scrappy quilt. For reference, you can get about (4) 4-1/2″ x 12-1/2″ rectangles and (8) 2-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ rectangles from one fat quarter. (More if you have big fat quarters.) So, for the sake of argument, you can get (2) blocks from each FQ with some smaller rectangles left over. Of course, you can’t put the same color on the top and the bottom of the block so you will need at least (2) FQs to make (4) blocks.

Let’s play with some ideas. But first…

Things you will find helpful:

Here is a quilt with straight-set blocks

This finishes 63″ x 75 with a 2-1/2″ (finished) first border and a 5″ (finished) second border.

Here is the same quilt with blocks in sashing

Quilt with the block set in sashing
This finishes 73″ x 87 with a 2″ (finished) sashing, a 2-1/2″ (finished) first border, and a 5″ (finished) second border.

Here is the block set on point in a quilt

Making a quilt with the block set on point
This finishes 60″ x 60″ with a 4″ border.

Assuming a 12″ block, your side setting triangles would need to be made from an 18-1/4″ block cut on both diagonals. The corner setting triangles would need to be made from a 9-3/8″ square cut on the diagonal. Here is more information on setting a quilt on point.

Here is the Corn off the Cob quilt block used as the center of a Square-in-a-Square block.

Quilt with the block as the center of a square-in-a-square block
The block is used as the center of a 17″ square-in-a-square block. So the quilt is 76″ x 93″, assuming a (finished) 4″ border.
