I love my new puppy but she is not leash trained! I walk her every day and she is getting better, but there is no question that she occasionally drags me Hither, Thither, and Yon. That’s why I thought this block would be great for the It’s a Dogs Life Blog Hop. Be sure to see the blocks offered by the other designers at the bottom of this list.
To Make the Hither and Yon Quilt Block, Assemble:
- Pink: (1) 4-3/4″ square, (1) 4-1/2″ square, (1) 4″ square, cut on the diagonal to make (2) triangles.
- Brown: (3) 4-1/2″ brown squares, (3) 4″ brown squares
- Cream: (2) 4-1/2″ cream squares (7) 4″ cream squares
Here are the fabrics I used in this block. If you would like to make the same block, click on the number underneath to order.
Before starting this project, I recommend that you press your fabric with spray sizing. It will make it easier to cut small pieces. Take the time to clean your machine, put in a new needle, and fill a few bobbins. When pressing, just hold the iron over a spot for a moment or two. This pattern assumes a perfect 1/4” seam.
Making the Blocks
To make the Half Square Triangle Blocks (HSTs), place a dark square right sides together with the same size light square. Draw a diagonal line on the back of the lighter square. Sew 1/4″ on both sides of the line. Cut on the line and press to the dark. Square this up.
Following the method above, make two HST blocks using (1) 4-1/2″ brown and (1) 4-1/2″ pink squares. Press but don’t square up. Cut one HST on the diagonal to make (2) two-color triangles. You will not use the second HST block.
Following the method above, make (4) HST blocks using the (2)
4-1/2″ brown and the (2) 4-1/2″ cream squares. Square these up to 4″, pressing to the dark. Place a 4″ cream square right sides together with these HSTs. Draw a diagonal line on the back of the cream square, bisecting the seam of the HST. Sew 1/4″ on either side of that line. You will make (8) 3-part units, but you will only need (6).
Following the method above, make six HST blocks using (3) 4″ brown and (3) 4″ cream squares. Press and square up to 3-1/2″.
Use the triangles from the 4″ square and the triangles from the pink and brown HST to make a Square-in-a-Square block with the 4-3/4″ pink square as the center.
Putting it all together
Use the remaining blocks to make the rows for the Hither and Yon block, pressing as shown. Square up to 12-1/2″.

Great idea to use that block to represent how our dogs drag us around! Thanks for the tutorial too.
I have never had a dog who was great on a leash. No ones’ fault but my own, for not working with them more. This block made me laugh after reading your story. I can so relate! 🙂
What a fun quilt block and definitely the way of a new puppy! So much to explore!
