Be Sharp Quilt Block
Before starting this project, I recommend that you press your fabric with spray sizing. It will make it easier to cut small pieces. Take the time to clean your machine, put in a new needle, and fill a few bobbins. When pressing, just hold the iron over a spot for a moment or two. This pattern assumes a perfect 1/4” seam.

Read over this tutorial before you start to sew.
Make sure you understand all the directions before you begin cutting. Pressing means just holding the iron over a spot for a moment or two. Don’t drag the iron back and forth as you normally do when ironing. That might distort your seams. The seam allowance in this pattern is 1/4″.
This block is sewn in columns.
Sew a 1-1/2″ × 2-1/2″ Background rectangle next to a 1-1/2″ × 2″ Black rectangle and press to the dark. Sew these two-part units between the background squares as shown below.
Create (2) columns like the one below. These are the right and left columns. They should measure
4″ × 12-1/2″. Press as shown.
Sew a 1-1/2″ × 2-1/2″ Background rectangle to the left side of a 1-1/2″ × 9″ Black rectangle. Sew a
1-1/2″ × 2″ Black rectangle to the right side. Press to the dark.
Create (2) columns like the one below. These are the sashings between the columns. Note that one will be flipped (turned upside down) when sewn between the two columns.
Sew a 1-1/2″ × 3-1/2″ Black rectangle between the Background rectangles as shown below. Press to the dark. This is the middle section. It should measure 4″ × 12-1/2″.
Sew the (3) columns with the sashings between them as shown above. Press to the sashings. Your block should measure 12-1/2″ square. You are done! Enjoy!
