Cook Your Goose Quilt Mystery

The New Years Day Quilt Mystery starts Jan 1, 2023 at 10AM Eastern. I’ve decided to start a series on How To Make Flying Geese blocks, starting with this post. This mystery quilt is designed to show you the first two different ways to make perfect flying geese blocks. The fabric requirements to make it larger are at the bottom of this page.

To print this clue, use the green Print Friendly button at the bottom of this page. And remember: anyone who sends me a picture of any completed clue during the mystery will automatically get a copy of the complete pattern when we are done. Plus, I have some donated door prizes this time, too!

One caveat: I have already made this quilt, so most of the illustrations will be graphics.

Fabric Requirements for the 64″ x 76″ Size:

These are the fabrics in the quilt that I made. Use your own colors and fabrics, of course.

  • 1/ 2 yard light (the lt tan in the picture below)
  • Background # 1 Quilt Fabric
  • 2/3 yard light medium (the lt pink in the picture below)
  • Pink Stars Quilt Fabric
  • 1-1/4 yard medium (the dark pink in the picture below)
This includes the binding. If you are going to make the binding a different color, you will only need
    2/3 yard.
It also includes 6″ for an optional flange, which is a 1″ folded strip inserted between the borders as a three-dimensional accent. You can eliminate that if you are low on fabric.
  • Dk Pink Quilt Fabric
  • 1 yard dark (the chocolate in the picture below)
  • Brown and Pink Quilt Fabric
  • 2 yards background (shown below)
  • Background # 2 Quilt Fabric
  • 1 yard border (large scale print below)
  • Border Quilt Fabric

To make the quilt larger (80″ x 90″), you will need an additional 5/8 yard light, 5/8 yard light medium, 5/8 yard medium, 3/4 yd dark, 1 yard of background and 1/8 yard border.

Helpful but not required:

□ a rotating cutting board
□ a Lazy Girl NoMath ruler
□ a small Quilt-in-a-day Flying Geese Ruler
□ a Creative Grid Ultimate Flying Geese Tool
sharp pins (applique or patchwork)

  1. What is the frequency of the clues? (I looked for the info and must be reading right over it.)
    Pulling fabric for this today!
    thanks.

  2. Must it use a single fabric for each colour, or would a variety work for a scrappy quilt? I hope I can fit it in between work 😊
