Cook Your Goose Cutting Instructions

The New Years Day Quilt Mystery starts Jan 1, 2023 at 10AM Eastern. It’s going to become part of a series on How To Make Flying Geese blocks. To make this mystery quilt, follow the clues at the bottom of this page. You can print any page by using the green Print Friendly button.

Before starting this project, I recommend that you press your fabric with spray sizing. It will make it easier to cut small pieces. Take the time to clean your machine, put in a new needle, and fill a few bobbins. When pressing, just hold the iron over a spot for a moment or two. This pattern assumes a perfect 1/4” seam.

You will be cutting both strips and squares that are very similar in size. Use baggies or some other method of identification to clearly identify each group by size so you don’t accidentally use the wrong one when you sew. You will have small amounts of extra fabric left over from each cut. Set that aside so you don’t get it mixed up with the pieces you cut to use. You might find it helpful to go through the pattern and cross out the pattern color (such as “light medium”) and write in your color.

This pattern is designed to show you two different ways to make Flying Geese. There are several rulers available which will make your sewing experience much easier, but they are not required to complete this pattern. They include the Stripology ruler for cutting accurate strips and cross-cutting squares; (see the tutorial here) the Quilt in a Day (QIAD) small Flying Geese ruler (see the tutorial here) for squaring up the flying geese; the Lazy Girl No Math ruler for making Flying Geese; and a mat which rotates.
