Flying Geese for Block Two

This mystery quilt is designed to show you two different ways to make perfect flying geese blocks. The clue links are listed at the bottom of this tutorial. To print just this clue, use the green Print Friendly button at the bottom of this page.

The next block we are going to make uses Flying Geese Blocks made using the Lazy Girl No Math ruler. This ruler has lines corresponding to different size flying geese blocks, making it very handy for all sizes.  The size we are making is size J. If you don’t have this ruler, the method I am using is basically the same one as in this tutorial.

Practice this method of making Flying Geese Quilt Blocks

To make a practice block using this method, lay two 3-7/8″ background squares face down on a 7-1/4″ light medium square at opposite corners.  The two squares will overlap each other slightly in the center.

Making a Flying Goose Quilt Block

Draw a line on the diagonal and sew 1/4″ on either side of the diagonal.

TIP: Use a SCANT quarter-inch seam in this method.

Cut these apart on the diagonal line.  Press the squares away from the center, creating two blocks which look like a heart.

Place another 3 7/8″ background square face down on the heart with the point overlapping the middle.  Draw a line on the diagonal and sew 1/4″ on either side of the diagonal.  Cut apart and you have two flying geese units that should require no trimming except to cut off the dog ears.  Two hearts will make four flying geese blocks.

Making Flying Geese Quilt Blocks using the No-Math Method

Assemble:

(10) 7-1/4″ Light Medium squares
(40) 3-7/8″ Background Squares

Following the above directions, make a total of (40) flying geese units. To make your sewing more efficient, mark your diagonal lines and chain stitch all your squares at once.  Cut them apart, mark your diagonal lines again and chain stitch the second set.  Cut them apart and trim to 3-1/2″ ×  6-1/2″.   Press to the dark.

IF YOU ARE MAKING THE LARGER SIZE
You will need more blocks. You will need to make a total of (60) Flying Geese Units in this colorway.
