New Years Day Quilt Mystery Clue Four

Pretty in Paisley

This is a 72″ x 88″ quilt with two narrow borders. If you would like to make it smaller, just make fewer blocks. If you would like to make it larger, just add borders. Easy peasy.

Don’t forget to send me pictures! Anyone who sends me a picture of any stage during or just after the mystery will get a copy of the final pattern. My email address is moc.liamgobfsctd@sngisednoomebeohp.

Piecing Ahead

Assemble:

  • (8) Taupe Dots 2-1/2″ wide by the WOF for the first border
  • (9) Deep Blue strips 2-1/2″ wide by the WOF for the outer border
  • (10) Stripe strips 2-1/2″ wide by the WOF for the binding.

Cut off the selvage ends of your strips. Manufacturers use this edge of the fabric
to identify the fabric and create registration circles to double-check color placement. It
is more tightly woven than the rest of the fabric. Avoid it wherever possible. However, you can use it to match fabrics. Each of those circles is a color in that quilt. Read the article on How to Choose Fabrics that will Make Your Quilt Sing.

Working with each group of strips separately, sew them end to end, mitering the joins if you prefer. Mitering the seams makes it a little less noticeable. To do this, sewing the two strips right sides together at an angle as shown. Trim seams to 1/4″ and press open.

Save the binding strip to use after the quilt top has been quilted.
